Ghost Knives: The Oddball Icons of the Aquarium World
Ghost knives have long stood out as mascots of the oddball fish world. With their slender, blade-like bodies, lack of a dorsal fin, and a mesmerizing ability to swim both forward and backward with ease, they’re truly one of the coolest freshwater species out there.
These unique fish can grow up to 30cm in length and are known for being quite shy. They thrive when provided with plenty of hiding spaces such as tunnels, driftwood, and other shaded areas. While they can be housed with a variety of other fish, tank mate size is crucial—since ghost knives are much larger, smaller companions may become targets.
Feeding ghost knives can be a bit tricky. They’re carnivores and do best on a high-protein diet. Frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp are ideal, but a quality, carnivore-based pellet food is also recommended. As nocturnal feeders, it’s best to offer food at night or in dim lighting when they feel most comfortable coming out to eat.
